Collaboration to establish safety plan might prevent work injury

Employees of small businesses in New York might not realize that they could play an essential part in the safety of their work environments. No one wants to deal with mounting medical bills and lost income due to a work injury that could have been prevented. Collaboration between employer and employees can reduce insurance costs for the employer and financial hardship for employees.

Such collaboration would require all parties to work together on developing protocols to serve as official regulations for maintaining a safe environment. A good starting point might be identifying potential hazards. However, along with the unique dangers inherent to that business, common risks must also be noted. Particular focus must be on housekeeping to eliminate the hazards posed by wet floors and randomly placed objects that could cause trips and falls. Signage to mark dangerous areas can be strategically placed to serve as warnings.

Safety training at regular intervals is crucial, not only in the operation of equipment, but to ensure all employees become aware of, and can recognize, potential hazards, and know how to deal with dangerous situations. Employees must be trained in the proper use of personal protective equipment, and the importance of not working without it. Proper lifting techniques to prevent musculoskeletal injuries during the lifting and moving of heavy objects can be included in the training.

With a carefully crafted list of internal safety regulations, any small business might limit work injury occurrences. However, despite all precautions, accidents may happen, and this is where the New York workers' compensation insurance program comes in. With the help of an experienced attorney, injured workers can file benefits claims for coverage of medical expenses and a portion of lost wages.
