Fatal workplace accident claims MTA worker's life

It was a horrific start to a workday when a group of MTA workers in New York witnessed one of their colleagues fall to his death. This workplace accident happened shortly before 5 a.m. on a recent Tuesday at a subway station in East Harlem. Reportedly, the 23-year-old man had only been in this job for six months before he lost his life.

Although investigators will likely seek answers to the cause of the incident, initial indications are that the worker leaned against a wooden railing that gave way. He fell nine feet to the railway tracks below and landed head first. Witnesses say the worker was still alive when he was pulled onto the platform.

Emergency workers performed CPR and did what they could to save the worker's life. Sadly, he succumbed to his injuries within about an hour. The worker's father noted that his son weighed about 270 pounds, and his height was six-foot-three -- suggesting that the protective railing might not have been strong enough to withstand his weight.

Losing a loved one in a workplace accident is naturally a traumatic experience, and surviving family members typically have to cope with the unanticipated financial consequences at this difficult time. It might be comforting to know that the New York workers' compensation insurance program offers survivors' benefits to a deceased worker's dependents. The benefits typically cover the expenses related to end-of-life arrangements, along with a financial package to make up for lost wages -- based on the deceased worker's average weekly wage before death.
