Workplace accident claims life of New York elevator technician

Construction company owners and contractors are expected to protect their employees from harm. They must provide construction sites that are free of known hazards, and provide the necessary personal protective equipment for each worker according to the jobs with which they are tasked. The New York City Department of Buildings has ordered an investigation into a recent fatal workplace accident at a Flatiron construction site.

According to an incident report by emergency workers who responded to the call, a 33-year-old elevator technician who was part of a construction crew fell nine floors to his death. They say the man fell down an elevator shaft on a recent Tuesday shortly before 9 a.m. DOB inspectors will investigate the circumstances that led to the tragedy.

Reportedly, authorities suspect that workers were exposed to dangerous site conditions. They added that the contractor at this building site had received approximately 20 citations for safety violations during the past year. Included were exposure to tripping hazards as well as 6-foot holes without guardrails.

It is not known whether the worker who lost his life was wearing fall protection at the time of the incident. Regardless of the outcome of the inquiry into this tragic workplace accident, the surviving family members may seek financial relief through the New York workers' compensation insurance program. An attorney who is experienced in navigating death benefits claims can handle the complicated legal and administrative steps required to secure compensation for end-of-life expenses and wage replacement. The financial package will likely include a percentage of the deceased worker's average weekly wage to be paid over a predetermined period for assistance with day-to-day living expenses.
