Don't Take a Fall at Work

Everyone has taken a fall. Part of learning to walk is learning to fall down. As we get older, spills can often have increasingly serious consequences. For workers, a fall can mean injuries that result in medical bills, lost wages and a diminished earning capacity.

About two-thirds of all fall-related injuries are sustained by adults of working age. About a third of those adults are age 45 to 65 and about a third are ages 18 to 44. The most common type of fall-related injury? Sprains and strains, according to the National Health Interview Survey.

These spills and falls are not uncommon. Nearly 10 million occur each year, with about two-thirds involving adults who are of working age. For employers, those numbers provide a glimpse into ways to cut their operating costs.

"The findings will help companies in their ongoing efforts to protect workers and the public from falls," said an insurance company spokesperson, who added that when employers protect their workers, there are a number of benefits to the companies. Benefits include keeping skilled workers on the job, as well as reducing the employers' workers' compensation and insurance costs.

The benefit to employees are obvious. First and foremost, if they avoid a fall, they avoid potential injury and pain, as well as the potential for surgeries, physical therapy, lost wages and much more. When a fall does happen on the job, workers are typically eligible for workers' comp benefits which can help replace some of those lost earnings, as well as cover medical expenses.
