2015 construction accident deaths in NYC already reach 2014 total

While the following story applies more to the city of New York than the state, it still exemplifies the worries that anyone should have about construction site safety and the dangers that construction workers face on a regular basis.

In the city of New York, construction fatalities are occurring at an alarming rate. As of the writing of our source article, eight people had died this year alone in construction accidents. That's equal to the number of fatalities for all of 2014, and it is on pace with the last worst year for construction accident fatalities (2008, when 19 people died).

The city has undergone some extensive construction projects recently, and many are blaming the increased work for the rise in fatalities. While there is undoubtedly a connection between the two, this still doesn't mean that the phenomenon is acceptable. We need to be doing more to protect construction workers.

Construction sites are inherently dangerous, with massive machines, powerful equipment and dangerous substances aplenty. New York has the added danger of being a very vertical city, which means there are precarious heights and scaffolding issues that construction workers need to navigate.

While the city and contractors may not be doing everything they can to protect construction workers, they can seek a certain form of financial protection, workers' compensation, to help them deal with a construction accident and the injuries they suffered. This can become a complex legal matter though, so injured victims should consult with an experienced attorney if the matter becomes complicated.
