Campaign targeting fatal construction falls is announced

We have previously written about the fact that risk of falls on construction sites is a very real hazard faced by New York construction workers on a daily basis. Because fall injuries can be fatal, it is imperative that employers and workers alike make efforts to ensure that falls on construction sites are prevented.

In an effort to heighten awareness about the hazards of work-related falls and to help prevent these accidents from occurring, the U.S. Labor Department's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) recently announced that it will launch a national safety campaign targeting this issue in early June of this year. At the heart of the campaign is a nationwide stand-down.

The stand-down aspect of the campaign asks employers and workers to take a pause during the days of the campaign to talk about both general fall prevention on construction sites and other fall-related topics.

The assistant secretary of labor for occupational safety and health recently explained the importance of the campaign when he noted that, "Falls account for more than a third of all deaths in this industry. We're working with employers, workers, industry groups, state OSH plans, and civic and faith-based organizations to host safety stand-downs that focus on recognizing hazards and preventing falls. We are getting the message out to America's employers that safety pays and falls cost."

Employers and workers interested in preparing for the June stand-down campaign can visit the newly launched stand-down website that OSHA has constructed. The site contains information on ways that employers and workers can hold a valuable and successful stand-down.
