Proper protection is critical to preventing eye injuries at work

A recent survey conducted by Kimberly-Clark Professional reveals that too many workers fail to take proper precautions when it comes to eye protection in the workplace. Specifically, 85 percent of industrial employees responding to the survey indicated that they have observed co-workers failing to adhere to proper eye safety standards by not wearing appropriate protective eyewear in situations that warrant it.

Failure to properly protect your eyes at work can lead to eye strain, eye injuries and vision loss, depending on the type of work you do. Industrial workers and laborers of all kinds generally need to wear safety goggles while engaging in any tasks which could lead to eye injury. However, even office workers need to properly protect their peepers. Looking away from your computer screen and focusing on something else each hour is important to prevent strain.

A product manager with Kimberly-Clark's Eye and Face Protection recently explained that "This high rate of noncompliance seriously jeopardizes worker health and safety. In many instances, uncomfortable eyewear or fogged lenses could be responsible. The results are very disconcerting when you consider that 90 percent of eye injuries can be prevented through the use of proper protective eyewear. Enhancing eyewear practices is critical to creating exceptional workplaces-those that are safe, healthy, and productive for all employees."

Recent statistics from the Occupational Health and Safety Administration indicate that approximately three out of five employees who suffer eye injury on the job are not taking proper safety precautions or are wearing incorrect eye protection for the task at hand. Please, for your own safety, wear proper eye protection when engaging in dangerous work and report employers who do not adequately outfit their employees with proper eye gear.
