Fighting the good fight

There is no doubt that Newburgh firefighters were saddened to hear about the FDNY firefighters injured earlier this week in an enormous Bronx blaze.

Three firefighters suffered critical on-the-job injuries as the department fought to subdue a fire that engulfed five buildings. Fire marshals later said the conflagration was started by children playing with fire inside a two-story building.

A 34-year-old firefighter suffered what fire officials called severe heat stroke while he worked on a roof of a burning building. Commissioner Daniel Nigro told a TV reporter that "the man's (body) temperature was extremely high."

Doctors were trying to save the nearly severed arm of a 44-year-old firefighter injured when the truck he was driving crashed on the way to the blaze.

Officials said the other firefighter in critical condition had a heart attack during the fire fight.

The three men were hospitalized in critical but stable condition, according to the report.

Everyone knows that fighting fires is an extremely dangerous way to make a living. Like others, we are grateful for the men and women who sacrifice to keep us safe.

But we also know that others perform essential jobs as well and that they, too, suffer workplace injuries and fall victim to illnesses caused by their occupational duties. For most of them, workers' compensation benefits will be awarded to cover medical costs and replace some of their lost wages.

For those who have benefits denied, a workers' comp attorney can fight for the compensation you need and deserve. You can speak with an experienced Newburgh workers' compensation lawyer about the details of your situation.
